HAT IN A BAG® was founded in
1997 by Abby Minot, to market innovative, functional, portable, stylish sun
hats and rain hats. The HAT IN A BAG® was a result of Abby's
personal quest for a travel hat to use backpacking at high altitudes, where the
sun's damaging ultraviolet rays are increased. For every 1000-foot rise above
sea level, ultraviolet intensity jumps 4%. At 10,000 feet, the strength of UV
radiation increases by 40%. She needed a packable hat to be as compact, light,
and UV protective as possible. Using the technology of a folding metal ring
from a car sunscreen, her first test sample was an all black hat. While it
prevented sunburn, it was too hot to be comfortable. Next she made a white hat,
which was cool, but the sun was blinding. The solution was to put the light
color on the outside, to keep her cool, and the dark color underneath to cut
the glare. And so the HAT IN A BAG® was born.
Since then, we've added more styles and
colors, but the underlying principles are the same. Our products are made to
perform, be convenient, portable and durable. We test our hats by machine
washing them 50 times. We soak them in salt water to be sure they'll hold up to
use at sea. We use DWR fabric, so our hats will perform as well in the rain as
they do in the sun. They have been field tested in the harshest conditions, by
mountaineers, at elevations exceeding 18,000 feet above sea level.
The extremely light weight, 3 ounces for
most styles, and the compactness are qualities that are required by
mountaineers, but can be appreciated by anyone. Like the miracle fibers
developed for space travel and eventually enjoyed by the average consumer, the
technology used in the HAT IN A BAG® makes carrying and using a hat
accessible and convenient for everyone.
The HAT IN A BAG® travels better
than any other hat we've seen. It is smaller, lighter, and the tension of the
brim pulls out the wrinkles when youit. Many felt and Panama hats
described as "crushable" become ruined if they are packed for more than a day,
but the HAT IN A BAG® can be stored for years without damage. And
while woven raffia hats look nice, the holes in the weave prevent them from
being UV protective. For anyone who spends time outdoors: travelers, hikers,
fishermen, golfers, backpackers, sailors, kayakers, rafters, beach combers,
bird watchers, shoppers at outdoor markets, outdoor event spectators and
parents with baby backpacks, the HAT IN A BAG® is the perfect
solution. When you need a sun hat, a rain hat, a travel hat, a packable hat, a
collapsible hat, a washable hat, a lightweight hat, a compact hat, men's hats
and women's hats, the HAT IN A BAG® is it!
The HAT IN A BAG® makes an
excellent gift, comes in 2 sizes, and most people know if someone else's head
is small or large. For Dad who works in the yard, Mom at the kid's soccer game,
Grandma & Grandpa in Florida, Uncle Bob who loves the beach and rafting,
Aunt Sue who worries about getting wrinkles, a friend going on a cruise or trip
to Europe, or the whole family when they go to an amusement park or the zoo,
the HAT IN A BAG® is the ideal companion.
Every day there is new information about the
dangerous depletion of the ozone layer. The connection between this and the
skyrocketing cases of skin cancer is well documented. People are now aware that
we all need a hat for protection. A baseball hat doesn't protect your face well
or your ears and neck. Lots of us don't wear protective, wide brimmed hats
because they are annoying to carry when not in use. The HAT IN A
BAG® makes this excuse obsolete. When you're not using it, just twist
it up and put it in the small zippered bag, hook the bag onto your belt loop
shoulder strap, waistband, or tuck it in a purse or pocket.
Here are a few facts about sun
More than 90 percent of all skin cancers
are the result of sun exposure.
One in 6 Americans will develop skin
cancer in their lifetime; one in three if they're fair skinned.
Malignant melanoma rates have increased
1200% since 1930, faster than any other type of cancer.
80% of skin cancers appear on the face,
head and neck.
The UPF rating for the HAT IN A BAG®
